Gareth Charles

Opinion on Digital Tax: It’s happening so embrace the opportunity it gives you, and how it will help you help your clients improve their understanding of their businesses.

Steven Cox

Chief Evangelist

BIO: Steve is a qualified accountant and technology professional with over 14 years’ experience within the IT, software and accountancy industry. Currently in charge of all things product in IRIS, he is responsible for roadmap and legislative connection across the UK and Government.

Opinion on Digital Tax: HMRC’s new digital regime is the right direction for the UK and a huge opportunity for the accountancy market to work closer with their clients. Despite delays, as long as HMRC can deliver on its huge promises and technology, then this could be the era of the Digital Accountant!

Paul Onions

Strategic Product Lead

BIO: After starting his career as an accountant in practice Paul moved into the software industry and is now a senior executive with 19 years’ experience in market leading software development companies. Paul is responsible for the IRIS product strategy and roadmap ensuring IRIS stays ahead of the legislation while continuing to deliver significant efficiency gains and great new functionality. Paul played an instrumental role in rolling out ELS, Online Filing, iXBRL, FRS and now MTD at IRIS.

Opinion on Digital Tax: Making Tax Digital is a double edged sword… On the one hand it will give all businesses and tax payers much better clarity on their tax affairs and cash flow and it will be great to see a single view across all taxes in one digital tax account. It is also a fantastic opportunity for practices to digitise client bookkeeping and shift to a more collaborative style of working with their clients that also brings greater added value service possibilities (the whole virtual CFO idea). On the other hand… There will no doubt be a greater volume of work and a higher reporting burden on business as a whole.

Tolu Ajimoko

Digital Strategist

BIO: Tolu has over 13 years' experience with IRIS Software. He has held various roles from support, business analyst and product management. Tolu specialises in tax including personal, corporation & trust tax and capital allowances. Tolu has also been involved in a number of major tax projects at IRIS including iXBRL and now MTD.

Opinion on Digital Tax: It’s going to transform the way that businesses and accountants work, and create a more efficient and real-time tax system. Businesses will be able to get a better insight into how they are performing and get a view of what their final tax position will be on a more regular basis. Accountants will be able to offer clients a more efficient and proactive service. A win for both!

Jenny Strudwick

Digital Solutions Lead

BIO: Jenny has been instrumental in major tax changes over the last 15 years, from FBI to iXBRL and now MTD. Jenny works closely with HMRC as they develop their MTD strategy. Prior to IRIS Jenny spent a number of years in practice.

Opinion on Digital Tax: I believe that the strategy behind the digital tax reforms is the right one. We live in a digital world and we expect to be able to send and receive information instantly online. Implemented well, MTD will mean a new tax system that will allow access to real-time data and potentially allow for a more simplified taxation process, but I am under no illusion that it is going to take a lot of hard work to get there.
